tuiss Loves :: Color Design Hotel

tuiss Love
Last week we featured the Rough Luxe Hotel, this week’s hotel though is luxury as you may expect it, the Color Design Hotel has full-on designer feel. Quite fittingly the hotel is based in the heart of Paris in the Bastille sector, the capital’s trendiest quarter.

Every floor of the hotel has its own colour with bright colourful touches and dazzling mosaics, the bright colours sit on white backgrounds and create a totally unique look.  Color Design Hotel ticks our design detail box big time!

tuiss Love :: Rough Luxe

tuiss LoveRough Luxe is one of the hottest things around and here at tuiss we adore the idea, it’s a worldwide brand and includes hotels, shops and restaurants. Rough Luxe mixes up the old and the new, whether it be objects, the furniture or the building itself. Luckily we have a hotel in London which is currently the place to be seen.

At London’s Rough Luxe hotel you can expect to find distressed walls sitting comfortably alongside beautiful fittings and luxurious fabrics. If you just fancy dipping just your toe into Rough Luxe then you can always drop in for a bite to eat. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, it’s difficult not to be moved by the RL concept of luxury. Maybe we all have a little luxury in our lives?

It is a new way of looking at luxury as part of time and not just as an object of consumption. Luxury should be an enriching personal experience and not simply the ownership or utilisation of an expensive object. It is a different definition of luxury: time for reflection, the intellectual value of objects – of art, nature, culture, our environment and the people around us, of social and cultural experiences linked to locations as well as the ‘consumable’ items; food, lifestyle objects and events.

tuiss love :: Palmer and Sons bespoke leather

true-love-small

Palmer and Sons are based in Vancouver, Canada and produce some simply stunning leather goods.

Leather is a controversial product with many pros and cons to its use. In cases like this we feel a quality product that lasts for generations is one way to square the circle, when it is handled with the love and care that Palmer and Sons give every single one of their products we think it deserves a little tuiss love, just please choose the vegetable tan leather.

At Palmer And Sons we make all of our designs with only our own hands in Vancouver, Canada.  My son Jack and myself design, prototype and produce each design one at a time from start to finish. Using traditional methods, heritage materials and vintage tools to bring you designs that are timeless and peaceful in their principles.  We hope you enjoy our limited issue designs, we feel they speak to a slow, calm, and more enjoyable mode of life.

tuiss Love :: Bold & Noble

true-love-smallWe really do love Bold & Noble. Not only are their prints super, super stylish, great value but they’re also earth friendly too. Quite like tuiss really!

Producing each poster takes real skill, inks are hand mixed and then printed using the silkscreen printing process. Based in Hertfordshire Bold & Noble do all they can to be green, the card is recycled card, and the packaging has been thought about too.

Look out for the prints that would look great in nursery or pre-school bedroom, it’s never too early to have style!

tuiss Love :: Glove Love

true-love-smallWhat to do with a lone glove or lost glove that you find? Glove Love has the answer. Glove Love pair up gloves to make a ‘matching’ pair. The gloves that you will receive will be washed and specially labelled with the Glove Love many-handed monster. An unusual gift for this Christmas time.

There is a lovely story behind Glove Love that’s well worth a quick read or watch their quirky video.

tuiss Love :: Designer lighting

true-love-small

These lights from the Caroline McGrath website touch all three of the tuiss touchstones with their design details, affordability and kindness to the environment.

Which is your favourite? I’m drawn to the Flair but love the shape of the aptly named Calm Drop.

A warm light emanates from Flair’s balanced, quiet form. The outer petals touch lightly, each supporting the others to form a light canopy, delicately holding still. In this paper option, the designers tried to use as little material and energy as possible, while making the Flair Lampshade tranquil and gentle.

This intriguing and striking design has been developed by interiors company One Foot Taller in collaboration with textile designer Genevieve Bennett. The paper option gives soft, distinct silhouettes and creates fine shadows around the shade. Produced from high quality recycled paper.

Calm Drop Lampshade in Organic Cotton

The Calm Drop Lampshade is a soothing, gentle design that diffuses the light in a living space or bedroom. In groups, it can produce an exciting centrepiece - perhaps over a dining table. The Calm Drop Lampshade is made from organic cotton and uses minimal energy to produce. Quite simply beautiful.

Innovative upcycling :: rubbish to beauty

The phrase upcycling was coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braugart in their book on ecologically intelligent design, Cradle to Cradle. In the simplest terms, upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value. All of the following products have been upcycled and some of them from surprising products.

Some we absolutely love and have bestowed tuiss love on them. In particular take a look at the Smateria website, you cannot fail to be impressed by the dedication and entrepreneurial spirit of the Cambodian people. Take a look at the videos too, taking a plastic bag and turning it into a handbag is tops in our opinion.

tuiss Love :: Crystal salt lamp

I have never seen one of these before, but how beautiful. This salt lamp is available from Natural Collection and is handcrafted from the crystalline salt of the Northern Punjab mountains.

The mineral lamp freshens the air around it by neutralising the positively charged ions present in stale air. This can help people with asthma, allergies as well as promoting better sleep. As if that wasn’t enough the lamp can also work to combat lethargy in a similar way to fresh, salty sea air.

For more information see this blog post at Natural Cures.

tuiss Love :: Ghost Furniture

true-love-smallGhost takes furniture that has had a hard life and heaps tender loving care onto them. The results speak for themselves, items that may have ended up in a skip now make outstanding designer pieces.

Very cleverly Ghost have given the background to each of their unique pieces, I just had to include these happy ending stories!

Blue lilly bust

This poor battered lady was found at a Flea Market in Paris. She had been knocked about a bit and was crying out for some TLC. Finished in Designer's Guild Kingfisher and treated with Ghost’s special smooth wax finish. A vintage collar has been stiffened and fixed to the bust. A beautiful vintage brooch with lily of the valley in the centre and a silver frame has been pinned to the collar.

Chocolat Chair

We found this curvy and very sexy antique chair in an old barn in France. It had seen better days and was crying out for some TLC. Finished in a milk chocolate coloured paint it still needed a lift so we decided to wrap it in gold just like you would a chocolate. The seat has been upholstered in a delicious satin, striped in green/gold and chocolate and tied to the uprights at the back with the same fabric.

Chaise der Ferme

This fabulous farmhouse chair with a perfect rush seat was found in a cellar of a medieval house just outside Paris. The chair has been painted in Fired Earth Verde Antique and the ornate floral carvings in Fired Earth Rose Mallow Farrow and Ball Red Earth with the scroll details in Farrow and Ball Mouses Back.

Foot stool

Exactly what it says. This antique oak footstool was found in a large house clearance in Northumberland. Beautifully made with little turned legs. An old plaster cast of part of a gladiator's foot in a Roman sandal has been fixed to the top of the stool - yes that makes it a Foot Stool.
