tuiss Love :: Mad Men (& Fusion Venetian blinds)

tuiss loveI think I need a box set! Everyone is well and truly hooked on Mad Men the US drama set in the 1960’s in an advertising agency, and I missed the boat!

The 60’s had many iconic style and fashion looks, from miniskirts to beehives and mods. As far as home interiors were concerned it was all about G Plan, and as this Mad Men shot shows, window blinds! These blinds with their large slats and cotton tapes puts me very much in mind of our Fusion Maxim range, the Deco in particular matches the cool 60s style.

The Fusion Maxim Deco with its 50mm white aluminium slats lets light flood into the room, and the wooden rails and cotton tapes give undeniable style.

If you love the look of aluminium and wood then take a look at the complete Fusion collection where you’ll see we have a range of slats, tapes and wood colours.

tuiss Love :: Stylist magazine

Have you heard of  ‘Stylist’ yet? It’s a brand new weekly magazine for style conscious women. What’s more, it’s free on the big city streets as well as being online too.

We really like its mix of fashion, style, home, features and interviews. It’s the new must read for every savvy lady who wants to be at the top in every area of her life.

Stylist clearly knows all about style as they featured our Fleurista Mono blind in this week’s issue.

tuiss Love :: Norton & Sons

tuiss loveNorton & Sons was established in 1821 by English Tailor Walter Charles Norton to make clothes for the young gentlemen of the City of London. The company still thrives to this day, just proving that there will always be a place for tradition and expert craftmanship, in this case Savile Row tailoring.

Here at tuiss we of course love fabric as do Norton & Sons.

At Norton & Sons we take great pride in sourcing the finest British materials. We use English Worsteds from the mills of Yorkshire, and the best woollen spun tweeds from the Borders, the Highlands and the islands of Shetland, Harris, Mull and Islay. Many of the Mills date back centuries, with their cloths gracing occasions from Coronations to the Oscars.

We also source two unique hand-woven tweed collections directly from individual weavers working in the Hebrides. These wonderful craftsmen create beautiful cloths using traditional methods.

Patrick Grant is the owner of Norton & Sons, he’s quite the chap about town and to hear his take on fashion, tailoring and dressing to impress just click here to go to an interview with Style Salvage.

tuiss Love :: Harris Tweed (and window blinds)

true-love-smallHarris Tweed is known as the ‘Champagne of fabrics’ and it’s steeped in history dating back centuries. The fabric is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity and we don’t think it’s hard to see why. (In fact we’re in the throes of developing a tuiss range of Harris Tweed blinds, more about that later!)

Authentic Harris Tweed is governed by its own Act of Parliament and to be given the Orb stamp of authenticity the cloth has to be made to stringent standards, this from Harris Tweed Hebrides:

The law decrees that genuine Harris Tweed must be made from pure virgin wool which has been dyed and spun on the islands and handwoven at the home of the weaver in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The cloth is then returned to the mill for finishing. Only then can it be given the famous Orb stamp which authenticates it, metre by metre. And each piece of tweed can be traced back to the individual home weaver.

At tuiss we are always looking for new avenues to explore and at the moment we are busy talking to Crofters about a collection of authentic Harris Tweed roman blinds. We can imagine how beautiful these blinds will be and are very excited.

Until we can get the blinds on stream why not have a look at our Connecticut roman blind collection? The fabric is inspired by tweed and has a wonderfully soft handle. We have more than 15 colours in the range and the fabric makes up into the most wonderfully luxurious blind.

tuiss Love :: Who’s glass?

true-love-smallWho’s Glass is our sort of company, they’re clearly passionate about what they do and their heart is in the right place. And it goes without saying that their products are gorgeous.

Did you know that about 3.6 million tonnes of glass is used in the UK every year and over 1 million tonnes goes to landfill? Who’s Glass is doing their bit to correct this by upcycling old bottles into new things of beauty:

Every bottle we use is collected locally, heated and shaped by hand, then slowly cooled and packed. We take pride in ourselves that our glass is about as environmentally friendly as it possibly can be! We use no glues, either with the glass or in our packaging and every piece is hand engraved instead of labelled.

tuiss Love :: Use UK

true-love-smallUse UK is a wonderful website packed with unusual things. Just like us they love good design but they also have a conscience and do all they can to limit their impact on the environment.

In particular I love the limited edition cushions made from quality fabric sample books, also the vintage bags that have been given a good clean and are truly unique. What do you get for the woman who has everything? A cushion or a bag with a difference of course.

tuiss Love :: Sled Coffee Table

true-love-small

We love something a bit quirky here at tuiss and it’s not often you see a coffee table / rug combo! The sled is available from Duffy London.

A Coffee table that interacts with its Rug, the coffee table is in the shape of a traditional child’s sled and sits neatly into a thick pile rug with two deep grooves cut into it, giving the impression of compressed snow under the weight of the skis.

The table is made from Walnut and high grade birch plywood from Stewardship Council managed forests and other controlled sources.

tuiss Love :: Wiggly Wigglers

true-love-smallOver the years I’ve used Wiggly Wigglers many times, in fact my very first purchase with them, which was a can-of-worms wormery back in 2004 is still alive and squirming!

Wiggly Wigglers are based at Lower Blakemere Farm in rural Herefordshire and operate a wonderful business selling responsible and useful things for the garden and some for the home too. Despite offering so many traditional products Wiggly Wigglers are at the cutting edge of technology, you can view their ‘cinema’ as well as listen to their podcasts (which ideally need to be listened to while wearing big socks and clutching a mug of tea!).

You can’t fail to be impressed by Wiggly Wigglers, check out their floristy section and you will never use inter-flora again!

tuiss Love :: We Are Bear

tuiss Love
Here at tuiss we hope that you had a lovely Christmas. We all had a great time and are looking froward to 2010 and all our plans.

So without further ado onto the first blog post of the year.

Now we don’t want to assume but this is the time of the year when waist bands are a little tighter than usual and minds turn to easing off on the chocolates and wine!

We have just the thing for you with We Are Bear. We Are Bear produces a range of healthy snacks with no preservatives or additives at all. They also keep their carbon footprint as small as possible and generally try to be good people in all that they do, like paying farmers good prices for good fruit. (By the way if you have children then their fruit Yo Yo’s are a must.)

tuiss Love :: London Undercover

tuiss Love

London Undercover is the brainchild of designer Jamie Milestone. The master plan is to bring to life what is generally seen as a boring and disposable item and turn it into a must have talking point. Some of the umbrella designs are quirky designs, such as breakfast and fish and chips, but some are just pure class and will look superb on the arm of any stylish being.

An obvious canvas for expression, the designs aim to encourage people to enjoy and take pride in what is, an indispensable, quintessentially British accessory.

London Undercover not only touches on print, but also the elemental, functional parts of the design. In keeping with the British ecological ideology, almost every aspect of the product and process has been designed with a fresh environmental approach.
