Thursday thought by tuiss :: Save rain water with a water butt

Summer will soon be here and hopefully the rain will stop and the sun will shine and shine and then shine some more!

It’s another easey peasy Thursday thought. Install a water butt and save precious rain water. Then use the saved water on your garden, in the pond or to wash your car. Nothing gives greater satisfaction than using rainwater and not turning on a tap!

Thursday thought by tuiss :: Reusable water bottles

Picture a bottle of ice cold water. Now imagine it filled a quarter of the way up with oil.

That’s about how much oil was needed to produce the plastic bottle. Makes you think doesn’t it? And that’s before we get onto the problem of recycling the empty bottle, it can take a plastic bottle up to 450 years to decompose in landfill. (The number of plastic water bottles sent to UK landfill sites each year would fill Wembley stadium twice over.)

So, to look stylish, save money and do your bit why not use a steel water bottle? Steel bottles are BPA free (whereas plastic ones may not be) and while the controversy over BPA rages stick to the infinitely cooler steel alternative. One Green Bottle has some gorgeous bottles, as has Cool Green Attitude.

Thanks to National Geographic and Which for the stats.

Thursday thought by tuiss :: Save a flush

We like free ways to help the environment and this is a great one. If you have a toilet at home or work that has just the one flush setting then you need a Save – a – flush. This nifty bag expands when it’s put into the cistern and diplaces 1 litre of water everytime you flush. Incredibly that adds up to 35, 000 cups of tea a year!

Water companies generally give these away for free, eg Severn Trent Water, United Utilities. To find your supplier then click here and grab your freebie.
