tuiss Loves :: LS Lowry

Celebrating the works of LS Lowry, Tate Britain is holding an exhibition of his works this summer. Sounds like a perfect way to while away an afternoon to us.

Lowry used a very basic range of colours, which he mixed on his palette and painted on the white background. “I am a simple man, and I use simple materials: ivory, black, vermilion (red), Prussian blue, yellow ochre, flake white and no medium (e.g. linseed oil). That’s all I’ve ever used in my paintings. I like oils… I like a medium you can work into over a period of time”. Looking closely at the surface of Lowry’s paintings shows us the variety of ways he worked the paint with brushes (using both ends), with his fingers and with sticks or a nail.

tuiss Loves : : Julie Dodsworth

Julie Dodsworth’s wonderfully English designs are inspired by her time spent on British canals watching the beautifully painted boats go by. Her colourful, floral designs delightfully depict real English heritage and are available on a range of different products on her website and in stores throughout the country. We’re huge fans of her unique blend of modern kitsch and traditional British design.

tuiss Loves :: Rigby & Mac

Shop three shops in one! Rigby & Mac is the online world of three ‘real’ shops that sit, almost side by side, in Dulwich, London. All the shops work a different style but all are presented beautifully and we really love the vintage slash eclectic look of the website. Shop by shop, or shop by product, for every room in your home.

The dulwich trader at No.9 combines country style with a touch of glamour. Tomlinsons at No.89 has a feminine, vintage feel and proves that pale is definitely interesting. Ed at No.41 is a modern and quirky fusion of Scandinavian design and global influences.

tuiss Loves :: Sarah Hough

Artist Sarah Hough starts each day by walking her dogs and taking in the beautiful English countryside. She shares what she sees with a quick daily sketch on her blog, how wonderful to be so talented and so generous with those talents. By posting these sketches, I hope to offer a momentary pause in busy daily lives and a visual link with nature and the great outdoors, perhaps even bringing a breath of fresh air to brighten up your day.

Cows having breakfast

Up early this morning and tried to have a little chat with the cows over the hedge, but they were a bit too preoccupied with eating their breakfast.

tuiss Loves :: United Nations World Environment Day

Tomorrow is World Environment Day (WED) and the theme is think, eat, save.

This year’s campaign rallies you to take action from your home and then witness the power of collective decisions you and others have made to reduce food waste, save money, minimise the environmental impact of food production and force food production processes to become more efficient.

For ideas of how to think, eat and save check out some great ideas on the United Nations website, we love the idea of funny fruit, FIFO and Zeroing our fridge. What will you love and do?

tuiss Loves :: Rory Dobner

A graduate of Fine Art, Rory Dobner’s beautiful, wonderful and almost always humorous line drawings are fantastic. We particularly like this monocled cat cushion, but there is something for every animal lover, or indeed lover of the ‘quirky’ in his collection. From pesky pigeons to mischievous monkeys as well as the occasional slippery fish, we hope you’ll love his work too.
