Thursday thought by tuiss :: Babybel candles
Thursday thought is all about doing something simple to do your bit to help the planet. This one isn’t ever so simple but it does sound like fun!
My children love Babybels but I do ever so slightly fell aggrieved at both the cost and the packaging. Well I’ve sorted one of them! I spotted on Condo Blues a great idea of turning the red wax into a candle. Instructables also gives instructions for candle-making with babybels.
Get chomping kids!

tuiss Love :: SeedSafe by Marti Guixe at Alessi
Posted by Vanessa in personal, recycling, reusing, tuiss Love on March 22, 2010
tuiss go
es wild at the beginning of April so it’s timely that I spotted the SeedSafe designed by Marti Guixe for Alessi.
Here’s the idea, store the seeds from the fruit and vegetables that you eat, store them in the SeedSafe, plant them at your leisure and watch them grow. Easy and maybe fun too!
“Seeds are in some way more valuable than money. Therefore the seed safe is a must in each home. Keep the seeds you get from eating fruits, and then plant them to become a rich person.”
I first spotted this at Lushlee.
Thursday thought by tuiss :: reusable weigh bags
Posted by Vanessa in greener by nature, home, personal, reduce, thursday thought on March 11, 2010
I must drive check out assistants barmy as I pretty much never use a plastic bag to put my fruit and veg in. I just can’t see the point of putting a head of broccoli or bunch of bananas into a plastic bag. The only time I draw the line is if it’s pears which get bruised and dented so easily or if I have more than three of something!
I should probably invest less than a tenner in a set of one of these from Onya, tulle bags that are strong, see through and so lightweight that they won’t tip the scales ….
Other features include:
- Ideal for washing fruit and veg – these ingenious little bags are also designed so you can use them as a colander too
- Breathable storage prolongs life – most fruit ‘n’ veg types store better in a breathable net – not sitting in a plastic bag where they can sweat and bruise etc.
- Simply hang the bags on a hook in the pantry and again the produce will last much longer
- Just as useful in the Health Food shop for: nuts, grains, rice and lentils etc.
- Can even be used as a laundry bag for small and delicate items
- 5 mesh bags tuck into one little bag made from parachute material with karabiner hook.

by tuiss :: New York Steel roller blind
Everyone has a favourite blind here at tuiss and the favourite of our website designer is the New York Steel roller blind. Surely being a designery type he knows what he’s talking about!
The New York Steel roller blind is gorgeous and it oozes masculinity from every pore, from the dark navy colour to the technical streamlined fabric. With the addition of aluminium chain and smart tuiss badge this blind makes a superb statement.
New York Steel is a dramatic blind, combining a dark navy blue and a shimmery sparkle. The blind catches the light and makes the dark colour look and feel lighter. Blue is a calming colour so this black out blind will work well in a bedroom. Equally its dramatic looks will suit stainless steel accessories in a kitchen. New York Steel will give a modern and contemporary feel.
The New York Steel roller blind is made from blackout fabric so is perfect for a bedroom but we can see it any room with sophisticated high-tech equipment or no argument furnishings.
We’ve scoped out some uber cool and up to the minute gadgets that will co ordinate handsomely with this special blind. Here function meets style.

Designer Marcos Ignacio Madia is the man behind the Growin Up Speaker System. Capable of stacking, rotating and working together to create a unique feel for your stereo system.

The Quooker boiling water tap is one of those rare 'must haves'. The simple, ultra-safe idea renders kettles out of date and takes kitchens a giant leap forward. Popular throughout Europe, 100,000 installed to date.
Thursday thought by tuiss :: Yoyo Ceramic Notepad
Posted by Vanessa in home, personal, reduce, thursday thought on March 4, 2010
Saving paper. I could go on about using both sides of the paper, creating your own scrap paper book, writing very small….
or
I could introduce you to Yoyo’s Ceramic Notepad!
Ceramic Notepad has been sculpted initially from plaster, moulded and then made entirely out of clay. This smart jotter can be used to make those lists or leave little notes for your loved ones.
Supplied with a special pencil to write on the ceramic with, wipes or washes off easily, and believe me, it is most satisfying to write on the glazed surface with these waxy pencils (simple pleasures!) The hole through the top not only mimics a spiral jotter but also keeps the pen and pad together for convenient use.
Also for use with dry wipe markers or even permanent markers – they just wash off with water.
Thursday thought by tuiss :: Reusable water bottles
Picture a bottle of ice cold water. Now imagine it filled a quarter of the way up with oil.
That’s about how much oil was needed to produce the plastic bottle. Makes you think doesn’t it? And that’s before we get onto the problem of recycling the empty bottle, it can take a plastic bottle up to 450 years to decompose in landfill. (The number of plastic water bottles sent to UK landfill sites each year would fill Wembley stadium twice over.)
So, to look stylish, save money and do your bit why not use a steel water bottle? Steel bottles are BPA free (whereas plastic ones may not be) and while the controversy over BPA rages stick to the infinitely cooler steel alternative. One Green Bottle has some gorgeous bottles, as has Cool Green Attitude.
Thanks to National Geographic and Which for the stats.
tuiss Love :: Norton & Sons
Posted by Vanessa in personal, tuiss Love on January 25, 2010
Norton & Sons was established in 1821 by English Tailor Walter Charles Norton to make clothes for the young gentlemen of the City of London. The company still thrives to this day, just proving that there will always be a place for tradition and expert craftmanship, in this case Savile Row tailoring.
Here at tuiss we of course love fabric as do Norton & Sons.
At Norton & Sons we take great pride in sourcing the finest British materials. We use English Worsteds from the mills of Yorkshire, and the best woollen spun tweeds from the Borders, the Highlands and the islands of Shetland, Harris, Mull and Islay. Many of the Mills date back centuries, with their cloths gracing occasions from Coronations to the Oscars.
We also source two unique hand-woven tweed collections directly from individual weavers working in the Hebrides. These wonderful craftsmen create beautiful cloths using traditional methods.
Patrick Grant is the owner of Norton & Sons, he’s quite the chap about town and to hear his take on fashion, tailoring and dressing to impress just click here to go to an interview with Style Salvage.
tuiss Love :: Use UK
Posted by Vanessa in home, personal, tuiss Love on January 18, 2010
Use UK is a wonderful website packed with unusual things. Just like us they love good design but they also have a conscience and do all they can to limit their impact on the environment.
In particular I love the limited edition cushions made from quality fabric sample books, also the vintage bags that have been given a good clean and are truly unique. What do you get for the woman who has everything? A cushion or a bag with a difference of course.
